Atilio Garcia, Peruvian-American and owner of La Granja de Oro, talks to a patron.
Garcia came to the United States as a young man after his mother died 36 years ago. He started out washing floors in an Italian restaurant. "Then they made me a busboy. I was proud," he said. He next waited tables at the restaurant for fifteen years before finally earning enough money to open his own restaurant. In 1993, he opened La Granja de Oro, and has worked there seven days a week ever since.
